NFL RUNDOWN

A unique approach to the creative process. Every project begins with an idea, but it’s what happens to that idea along the way that counts.

This 2023 season has had its surprises as every season does. But this season ended with the end of the Belicheck-era in Foxboro and Pete Carroll done as Seahawks coach. With that said, we have had more of the same in the coaching landscape. Retreads and no changes to the diversity in head coaching spots. The 2024 season is off to a similar spot as many other seasons. Good news is we add Jerod Mayo and Raheem Morris to the list of coaches of color. But there are retreads such as Ken Dorsey and Dan Quinn getting even more chances. Not even counting in the rapid ascension of Dan Morgan in the personnel world. This all leads to simple questions. Or at least questions of interest. There is the good side of things. Where we have now black coaches in Atlanta, Houston, Vegas, New England, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay. That is now six coaches of color. Five of which have a history of winning and the sixth being a first time head coach. That is an over 83% win rate among them. Then there is the other side of things. For a league whose talent is over 70% minority driven, why are the coaches, or head coaches only about 20%. Especially with the high chance for success as listed earlier. Nothing against Dan Quinn, but why wasn’t an in-house coach who was part of a winning culture in KC in Bienemy not given a shot at a head coaching job. He was already in the building and as part of a great organization prior to arriving. Which people are looking at as of late, just look at Gannon in AZ. But why has Chicago stuck with a coach that has done nothing since arriving. Who has also done nothing consistently on offense and stunted the growth of Fields at every turn. Yes, he was a high draft pick, But history shows if you change coordinators and systems every year, it stunts all growth immediately. Why have the Saints stuck with Dennis Allen instead of taking a chance with someone else like a Bienemy. Especially given prior head coaching experience. All credit due to the chance the Titans are taking on their new coach but if you want a first time head coach with experience as an offensive mind why not look Bienemy’s way. Or follow the trend of former players that have had success like a Zach Orr in Baltimore. If the Bears stay pat and pick a qb first in the draft and don’t move Fields, I feel even more strongly that that personnel department needs to change. You draft Trubisky and that doesn’t work, obviously. There was alot wrong with that pick. Then you draft Fields, throw him in one offense. They have consistently changed it throughout his tenure while questioning his growth. But as things change, they always stay the same. Here is hoping for the landscape does grow and change for the better in the coming future.
